Walter G. Metschke: Remembering my Dad

Though he left this life two years ago today, my dad remains close to me in my heart.

We used to enjoy the Apollo Chorus's performance of Messiah at Orchestra Hall in Chicago each year early in December. Even after my job took me away from Illinois, I never missed our annual outing. We're pictured here afterward, as we were about to have dinner after the concert.

The holidays are much different now - both because he's no longer with us, and because he died at Christmas time. Bittersweet.

The words that a father speaks to his children in the privacy of home are not heard by the world, but, as in whispering galleries, they are clearly heard at the end, and by posterity.
