Remembering Iwo Jima

One of the most recognized photos from World War II (and often reproduced) is that of the flag raising at Iwo Jima. Photographer Joe Rosenthal won a Pulitzer Prize for it, and the image was the basis for the moving Marine Corps War Memorial which stands just outside Washington, D.C., and is pictured below. Truly iconic...though I wonder if schoolchildren today have even seen the photo. Today marks the 68th anniversary of that event.

Nearly 7,000 American troops lost their lives during the Battle of Iwo Jima.
