My Word for 2014

When I read about the idea of a "word for the year" late in 2012, I liked the concept so much I decided to give it a try. It seemed like it might be an interesting way as the new year began to set the tone for the 12 months to come.

My word for 2013 was "trust." First and foremost, to trust in God - especially when the going got tough. Secondarily, to trust in myself.

This year, I'm going with "focus." The main context for me comes from Hebrews 12:2 ("Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.").

Focusing on Jesus. Can't think of a better priority! Secondarily, I want to try to remain focused on the things that truly matter. As a photographer, I've honed that ability over the years.

I notice things. I appreciate the fact that I'm able to witness wonderful scenes, whether or not I'm able to make an image every time I'm out on a shoot. I often thank God while I'm out on location for the fact that I'm able to see and experience what's before me.

I want to extend that ability to the rest of my life, where I tend to get caught up in deadlines, schedules, worries - life in general - and sometimes lose sight of what's really important. For example, the fact that my eldest brother, battling very aggressive cancer, is still here to celebrate another birthday in a few days. What a reminder to focus on what's really important: things like family, friends, the gift of life, and the opportunity to extend a kindness to someone.

Remaining focused on those "little things" and appreciating them - the very fabric of life - make it much easier to put the inevitable rough patches or hectic periods in perspective. Warmest wishes to all of you as we embark upon the new year.
