Friends...God's Way of Taking Care of Us

"The better part of one's life consists of his friendships."
Abraham Lincoln

I severely sprained my ankle a few days ago in a freak accident while doing yard work. The emergency room doctor gave me the bad news that I'd torn the ligaments, which means recovery time will be up to 6 weeks. My trip down to New York to see the opening rounds of the US Open, which I'd been looking forward to since spring, is out. Huge disappointment.

A number of photo shoots that have already been booked are also not going to happen. Big worry...that involves my livelihood.

Even on crutches, I can barely get around the house, and I expect it'll be another 10 days before I can begin to walk - carefully. It is what it is, so I'll figure it all out. And of course, eventually, I'll once again be mobile.

But in the meantime, friends showed themselves to be the angels that they are. I had two immediate offers to go to the grocery store and get food if needed. Another dear, longtime friend (and another tennis nut!) who lives far away called to cheer me up.

And one of the people I was going to meet in New York at the Tennis Center cracked some jokes on the phone this morning and got me laughing when I really hadn't been feeling very lighthearted. That few minutes of levity was worth a million bucks.

My sister has been calling every day to check in and see how gimpy is doing.

What is it they say...that friends are God's way of taking care of us? I think there's a lot of truth to that.
